ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak were called to rescue a mariner showing symptoms of appendicitis Saturday.

According to a release from the USCG, the mariner was on a bulk carrier, about 122 miles southwest of Adak.

“Having the Jayhawk and Hercules crews work in tandem is essential for long-range medevac cases,” Petty Officer 1st Class Brent Flanick, a Coast Guard 17th District watchstander said.

Crewmembers of the Jayhawk were able to hoist the 27-year-old man and get him to a LifeMed aircrew in Adak, the release states.

Winds were reported at 29 miles per hour with 13 foot seas at the time of the medical rescue.
