Mat-Su Borough School District & Alaska State Troopers team up to talk school bus safety

The first day of school is Thursday for kids in the valley.

This means thousands of Mat-Su students will be at bus stops, riding bikes, and walking to and from school.

The school district along with the Alaska State Troopers want to remind folks to be aware of busses in the area.

State law requires drivers to stop when a stop sign is extended and flashing red lights but

State law requires drivers to stop when the stop sign is extended and lights are flashing routinely violated say each school bus is still passed at least once a day illegally.

A proper stop is about 30 feet away from the flashing signs and stopping can insure kids can enter and exit the bus safely.

A violation of the law can mean a one hundred dollar fine and marks on your license.
