Most popular baby names in Alaska in 2018 released
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services released the most popular baby names of 2018 and two new names took the crown over 2017's most popular baby names.
They are Oliver for boys and Olivia for girls.
Last year's most popular names were Emma and James.
According to the Social Security Administration, Olivia was the most popular name in 12 states and Oliver was the most popular name in 11 states. Olivia was the second most common baby girl's name in the whole United States, and Oliver was the fifth most common baby boy's name.
The report, compiled by the Section of Health Analytics & Vital Records at DHSS also included updates on the marriage, divorce, fertility, deaths, and adoption rates.
The fertility rate in Alaska continued to decline, dropping from 71.4 births per 1,000 women to 69.3 births. That is in line with a nationwide decline, but Alaska's fertility rate is still significantly higher than the nationwide rate of 59.0. Alaska mothers gave birth to a total of 10,092 babies last year.
The divorce rate also declined. In 2018, there were 4,940 marriages and 2,759 separations.
DHSS also released death rates including causes of deaths. 4,461 people died in Alaska last year. Cancer, heart disease and unintentional injuries were the top three causes of death. Officials say that the death rate actually decreased in 2018 compared to 2016 from 740.5 deaths per 100,000 down to 707.5 deaths per 100,000.
