ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - While under cloudy skies Wednesday Anchorage warms to near 41 degrees.
Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley will generally remain dry due to mountain blocking and any precipitation that does fall will fall as rain as temperatures stay near 40 degrees.
Winds gusting up to 50 mph will continue along Turnagain Arm through Wednesday. The same general precipitation pattern will persist through Thursday with rain across Kodiak Island and coastal Prince William Sound. Snow will continue further inland, with 3-5" possible along the Denali Highway between Cantwell and Paxson.
For the extended period, we are looking at high pressure sitting to the north of Southcentral while storms continue to move in out of the southwest. The remnants of a low-pressure system over the central Bering Sea will continue to dissipate as a weakening North Pacific low-pressure system sits south of the eastern Aleutians/Alaska Peninsula. A second low will move into the western Aleutians and the Bering Sea through Sunday, but will track north and should not cause significant impacts. The weather across the mainland should be relatively dry and quiet through Saturday. Then depending on how fast another low moving out of the North Pacific tracks north across the Gulf, there could be more active weather Sunday into Monday. Then a somewhat colder air mass will settle into the Copper River Basin Friday and Saturday, which in turn could make for windy conditions through Thompson Pass and the Matanuska Valley.
Cloudy in Anchorage Wednesday with a 40 percent chance of some light drizzle or rain as we warm up to 41 degrees. Winds will be out of the north at 15 mph but out of the southeast from 35-50 mph along Turnagain Arm as well as in higher elevations. Tuesday night we drop down to 39 degrees while under cloudy skies with a 70 percent chance of rain showers winds out of the north at 15 mph but out of the southeast from 35-50 mph along Turnagain Arm as well as in higher elevations
Cloudy Thursday as we warm up to 44 degrees with 10 mph winds out of the east but up to 30 mph along Turnagain Arm as well as in higher elevations. Thursday night we will be cloudy as we drop down to 37 degrees with variable 10 mph winds.
Looking ahead, Anchorage will be partly sunny on Friday with a high temperature of 43 degrees as well as light winds.
