ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It was a beautiful day for a bike ride. The inaugural bike for women bike festival kicked off at Kincaid Park Saturday.
The all-day event included skills clinics, a social ride, maintenance classes, and a short-track race.
The sold-out festival drew 180 participants to anchorage from as far as Healy, Seward, Homer, Talkeetna, and Soldotna.
The festival is designed for women, by women, to help female riders build confidence, connect with the local riding scene, and expand their skills.
"A comment that kept coming up was people are intimidated by the trails, and they're afraid of getting lost, and so it's really nice to be able, today, to help equip women - get them to familiarize themselves with some of the loops, and just gain confidence on some of the trails around here," says Mary Kate Repetski, Mountain Bike for Women Festival coordinator.
Event organizers hope to get even more women on bikes and keep the event going each year.
