ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Outdoor gear retailer REI could be the new tenant moving into the Mall at Sears, according to municipal permit records.

Those documents reveal that the municipality approved the construction of a sign which would read “REI Co-Op.” The permits can be found posted on the building’s front doors
on the east end of the building facing Northern Lights Boulevard.

Linda Boggs, a spokesperson for the mall, said that no lease has been signed with REI.

Representatives for the retail store in Kent, Washington also said over the phone that it has no announcement to make at this time.

Muni officials have said millions of dollars in renovations have been proposed for the area, including adding interior bike racks for shoppers, sidewalks, and a 7,000 square foot storage addition.

Two years ago Carrs Safeway grocery store closed its doors at the mall, and recently, so did Sears. Guitar Center and a Carrs grocery store have announced plans to move into that vacant space, according to Boggs.
