Mustang Smokin’ Stampede steps up after Tsalteshi Invite canceled

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Chugiak High School cross-country team will host the first ever Mustang Smokin' Stampede Saturday at the Beach Lake Trails after the Tsateshi Invite in Soldotna was cancelled due to wildfires and air quality concerns from fires on the Kenai Peninsula.

Chugiak cross-country Head Coach Bryan Kruchoski sprang into action after finding out the Tsalteshi was canceled. Working alongside other school administrators, Kruchoski was able to put together the Mustang Smoking Stampede quickly, and give schools like Bethel and Unalaska a chance to run after to flying to Southcentral Alaska.

This year’s Tsalteshi field included 19 schools and usually provides prep runners their first chance at a 5-kilometer race. Kruchoski says they’ll begin with a boys open and JV race at 10:00 AM, followed by girls open and JV 10:40 AM, boys varsity 11:20 AM and girls varsity 12:00 AM.

The Tsalteshi Invite wasn’t the only sporting event canceled by the Kenai Peninsula School District Kenai Central will not host Eielson, plus Soldotna and Homer will not be able to travel for their road games due to wildfires and air quality concerns
