CUTE ALERT: New arrival at the Alaska Zoo
A new harbor seal has been born at the Alaska Zoo. Chloe, the adult female harbor seal, gave birth Wednesday at about 8:45 p.m.
“She's proven to be a really good mom,” said Patrick Lampi, Executive Director of the Alaska Zoo. “Even keeping dad away, not letting him get too close. When they all get in the pool together then dad gets a little closer, and mom and dad have a few arguments about swimming lessons, I guess.”
Lampi says the pup is nursing well and is just a little bigger than when it was born two nights ago. “It's eyes were open and within 45 minutes, it was swimming in the pool,” said Lampi.
The sex of the new pup is unknown at this point. According to Lampi, “It's kind of hard to tell on seals. You've got to get a good look and I don't think our staff has gotten a really good look at the baby yet.
“We believe it's best to let the mothers take care of the babies unless we see a problem, so we try not to intervene.”
The new seal will not be staying at the Alaska Zoo. Lampi says their facility is only set up for two seals and there are other zoos looking for harbor seals. No word yet on where the seal pup will go but Lampi says the new arrival will probably be around for much of the summer.
