ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Fish and Game Department announced a new commercial harvest season for kelp in the Lower Cook Inlet today, Sept. 9.

Now, with the proper permits, people can commercially harvest kelp that has detached and washed up on the beaches of the Lower Cook Inlet.

According to a release from the Fish and Game Department, those participating need to have a Commissioner’s Permit that says when and where they can harvest. The release says the permit will also say how much kelp can be harvested.

Also, if harvested commercially, participants will need a Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission commercial permit. That can be found here.

The new permit will also require proper documentation of the harvest and participants will need to report those to the department in a timely fashion.
