Anchorage (KTUU) Teaching her students not to give up on their dreams.

North Star Elementary first grade teacher JoEllen Walters is preparing for the competition of a lifetime. She is representing Alaska in the Miss USA Competition in May.

"It's a dream come true," She said. "It's something that I, for awhile, thought was never going to happen. I actually competed five times for my title."

Walters advocates for the safe disposal of prescription drugs in Alaska.

"Since I've been working on it for about eight years the state of Alaska disposed of over twenty thousand pounds of prescription medications," Walters said. "So that's 20 thousand pounds that aren't being misused or abused. It's not affecting our environment. It's not harming our seniors or our youth."
