ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - You might feel as though you've been transported back in time if you stepped into Merrill Field Saturday. Over 100 years of airplanes and vehicles were on display during the Gathering of the Warbirds.
The free event was hosted by the Commemorative Air Force, and featured planes dating back to the World War II era. Organizers say hosting these events and getting kids interested in planes early on is their main goal as they hope to continue their legacy.
"In Alaska, airplanes are so much. They are a utility. They are a truck. They haul people. They haul stuff, said CAF Wing Leader Chris McKnight, "but there is a passion there too and having the soul of the airplane and the history of the airplane and telling their story is what this day is all about."
The group frequently offers rides in these historic aircraft. Visit CAF Alaska's https://www.cafalaska.org/ for more information.
