ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - 9:20 a.m. Update:
According to MEA's power outage map, power has been restored to the previously-impacted areas in Eagle River.
The exact cause is being looked into, but according to MEA, crews have a suspicion about what caused the outage.
"They are suspecting a bird flew into the lines, but are still patrolling to confirm," MEA wrote on social media after power began to restore. "Crews are continuing to patrol the lines to search for a cause," they later said.
Thousands in Eagle River awoke without power early Wednesday according to outage maps for the electric co-op providing power to that service area.
According to Matanuska Electric Association’s online power service map, 5,167 people found themselves without power as of 6 a.m.
The areas included in the outage range in Eagle River Proper, Eagle River Road up to the Nature Center, and Hiland Road. According to MEA, over 99% of people in the Eagle River Road and Hiland Road areas were out of power.
Officials with MEA did not return KTUU calls regarding the outage early Wednesday with information regarding when power could be expected to return.
This story will be updated when power returns to the impacted areas.
