ANCHORAGE (KTUU) They are called Man’s best friend. Pet owners across the country are celebrating National dog day with their furry canines.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the first year of dog ownership for a small dog can cost about $13,000.

That number increases to $18,000 for larger breeds.

Most of those expenses include spaying and neutering, initial medical fees and buying a crate, but after the first year, the cost drops to about $580 to $875 a year.

According to its official website, National Dog Day started in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige, who is also the founder of National Puppy Day.

National Dog Day brings light to the struggles dogs endure and celebrates the many traits they have.
