ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - In a couple of kennel stalls, at Anchorage Animal Care and Control, there are stacks of pet supplies, including bags of food, portable kennels, collars, leashes and toys. It's all going to be given away free of charge, Wednesday evening.
"Throughout the month, we get a lot of donated items, from people, that are very much appreciated," said Laura Atwood, the public relations coordinator for the agency. "So we go through those items. We use what we can here, at the shelter. What we can't use, we make available to the community."
Atwood said the giveaway program, which takes place every fourth Wednesday of the month and began about six months ago, has has become popular.
The supplies are especially helpful to families who are facing financial difficulties, Atwood said.
"People come through, and they're so grateful," Atwood said. "They share with us their stories. Maybe they're between paychecks, and they needed some food to tide them over. Or they've gotten a new animal, and they just can't quite afford the size kennel that they need."
Anchorage Animal Care and Control started the program to help make sure pets are cared for, even if their owners are struggling.
"All these things just help animals stay in their homes and help them be cared for the way we hope all animals are cared for," Atwood said.
The pet supply giveaway is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, at Anchorage Care and Control: 4711 Elmore Road, near Tudor Road.
Organizers say the supplies often go quickly, so they suggest arriving early.
