ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - REI has served Alaska in some capacity since 1979.
The outdoor supply company began operations here through catalog services but demand was so high that a physical store front came to Anchorage less than a year later.
In 1990, the store moved to the current facility at the Northern Lights Center where it's been for almost 30 years, but now those doors are closed for good.
Starting on Monday, the staff will start the process of transporting REI's inventory from Spenard to the newly renovated 50,000 square foot facility at Midtown Mall. The new store will have indoor bike parking, along with an outdoor education center and shops for bikes, skis, and snowboards.
The new location is set to open to the public on Friday, January 18th.
