PALMER, Alaska (KTUU) - The Mat-Su Borough is wrapping up repairs to Colony High School's earthquake-damaged gym.
The concrete block making up the north gym wall broke apart.
Mat-Su Borough Project Manager Jeff Walden explained, "During the earthquake, that wall wobbled enough that the top of it started to crumble."
A rarely-used stairwell was also damaged by the November 30, 7.0 magnitude earthquake.
"Probably 500 pounds of concrete block fell," said Walden. "From the distance of the roof. You know it's 40 or 50 feet."
Colony High School Principal Brendon McMahon was at the school the day the quake struck.
"Nobody was hurt. The facility is going to be better than it was; Safer than it was," McMahon said.
The gym is expected to open to students next week.
