Richardson Highway reopens after 76 inches of snow, avalanche

VALDEZ, Alaska (KTUU) - The Richardson Highway has reopened at Thompson Pass, after 76 inches of snow in five days caused an avalanche that blocked the only road into Valdez.

The Alaska Department of Transportation announced the re-opening Thursday evening, but noted that driving conditions are still very difficult.

The National Weather Service says in addition to the 76 inches of snow received in the past five days, 24 inches of snow is expected in the next 24 hours.

The highway closed Wednesday between milepost 12 and Milepost 42 after the avalanche, which happened near milepost 30.
