ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Its summer here in Alaska, but along with the warmer weather comes road construction season.
We’ve compiled some of the main detours and closures that could affect commuters, road trippers, or any drivers on the road.
The Alaska Department of Transportation is currently working on a project to improve the Glenn Highway through the end of July. This will cause the southbound slow lane to be closed from Eagle River to Hiland Road. Two lanes will remain open. DOT advises drivers to plan for extra time to get to their destinations.
The Palmer-Wasilla Highway is closed at the Glenn Highway through 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 while crews pave and install curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Drivers can access the Glenn via Hemmer Road and Bogard Road.
In Anchorage, the C Street roundabouts at Minnesota Drive will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14 through 5:30 a.m. on Monday, June 17. Drivers should anticipate intermittent ramp closures and delays. Southbound traffic is advised to use Dimond or 100th Ave as a detour; northbound traffic should use Klatt Road, or use the Old Seward Highway to avoid delays altogether.
Jewel Lake Road between Strawberry Road and 80th Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. Saturday, June 15 until 6 a.m. Monday, June, 17 for crews to relocate utilities.
79th Avenue at Jewel Lake Road will also be closed Monday, June 17 until Tuesday, June 18.
Construction on the Parks Highway between milepost 83 and 123.5 will run through September. Drivers should be aware of shoulder work, pilot cars, and roadway paving.
There will be pilot cars and flagging operations on the Sterling Highway between milepost 69 and 73, as well as 65 and 67 between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. on Friday and Sunday through the entire season.
Drivers should also be aware of a detour on Johnson Lake Loop Road as construction crews’ work on the Sterling Highway between milepost 101 and 118. Expect traffic restrictions and delays.
