ANCHORAGE (KTUU) A local cheer squad represented the last frontier at this year's Holiday Bowl halftime show in San Diego. But before the 29 girls hit the big stage, it was all about rehearsing on the small stage. Ranging from 8 to 13 years old, the local Pop Warner cheerleading squad was the only non-profit group and youngest to perform in front of 47,000 people.
"It was really fun, I really enjoyed it because it was fun like showing all the hard work we'd been doing throughout the days and finally being able to show it off, said 13-year old Haylie Anzelina.
But for the energetic group, cheering is more than yelling and hyping up the crowd, it's also helped them build self confidence.
"It helps me break out of my shell and cheering's just really fun," said 13-year old Sentha Wright.
The girls raised more than $50,000 with the help of sponsors, raffle tickets sales, bake sales, craft sales and many other efforts.
Registration for Pop Warner opens February 1, 2019. Free Camp will be in May.
