The marathon before the marathon: Iditarod mushers drop off supplies
Iditarod volunteers unloaded dog food and supplies, weighing and sorting packages by checkpoint during the first round of the Iditarod food drop.
Rookie and veteran mushers backed up their vehicles to a South Anchorage warehouse and helped volunteers unload bags.
Iditarod Race Director Mark Nordman said the warehouse will process several tons of food and supplies before the Iditarod starts.
"The average is fifteen hundred to seventeen hundred pounds per musher. Right now we're at fifty two mushers so you can add that up," Nordman said.
Mushers were relieved to wrap up the food drop.
"I'd rather run dogs than pack my bags," said Iditarod Veteran Anna Berington. "So we put things off until the last minute."
