ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Giving Tuesday is a day reserved for serving others and giving back to the community.
After several days of indulging on food and shopping deals, Giving Tuesday is all about rolling up your sleeves for charity. But what about those generous people that may not have a lot of extra cash to spare?
Several organizations in Anchorage say, as long as you have a charitable heart, they have a way for you to supply some holiday cheer.
"There isn't a better gift than the gift of life," said Robert Scanlon, Blood Bank of Alaska CEO. Donating blood is just one way to give this season.
“I think that that is what the holidays are about," says Lisa Aquino, Catholic Social Services executive director.
"We are focusing on a lot of different ways you can give," says Aquino.
The two organizations, and Anchorage Animal Care and Control are getting creative with their giving campaigns, catering to those that may not have the means for a cash donation.
If you're handy and creative, think about making an item for Anchorage Animal Care and Control.
"Some of those items include beds for our cats. So if you want to make something with the kids or if you're like me and you don't even own a needle and thread, let alone a sewing machine, we have a link for no-sew cat beds, which are very easily made if you do sew, then you can make beds like this. Those are always in demand," says Laura Atwood, with Animal Care and Control.
If you can spare an extra item in your grocery cart, Catholic Social Services is asking for all kinds of soap.
"A third of families will be bathing and they don't have extra funds for just soap and so they will just take a shower with just water because when you go grocery shopping and you have to eat and you also have to pay your utilities sometimes getting soap or laundry soap or detergent that all just feels like extra," says Aquino.
And if spending a single dime just isn't in the budget, think about saving a life.
"Blood donations is probably the most selfless gift that any person can give to the community. Without blood in the refrigerator at the hospital, the hospitals generally speaking aren't able to do many of the lifesaving services that they perform," says Scanlon
