MOUNTAIN VILLAGE (KTUU) - Alaska State Troopers say a woman has died after her armed boyfriend barricaded himself inside the home. The suspect turned himself into Troopers and has been charged with murder in the second degree.
Troopers in St. Mary’s received a report around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday of an assault in the city of Mountain Village, a western Alaskan village on the Yukon River.
34-year-old Alexie Walters of Mountain Village had allegedly assaulted multiple people in the community and barricaded himself inside his home with his girlfriend, identified by Troopers as 22-year-old Gertrude Queenie of Mountain Village.
Two Village Police Officers are said to have responded to the residence and attempted to enter. “Walters came to the door with a shotgun and fired a shot,” writes Megan Peters, a public information officer with the Alaska State Troopers, in the Trooper Dispatch.
Around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Troopers from St. Mary’s arrived on the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to contact Walters. Around an hour and a half later, Walters reportedly fled the house. A Village Police Officer went into the home to check on Queenie and found her deceased inside the residence.
Peters says Walters turned himself into the Mountain Village Public Safety Building around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Along with the second degree murder charge, Walters also faces two charges of assault in the third degree, tampering with evidence and assault in the third degree.
Queenie’s body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's office in Anchorage for an autopsy. Crime scene technicians from Anchorage are responding to the community Thursday to assist with scene investigation.
