AFD addresses Monday evening's incident which left a firefighter severely injured

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Correction: Ben Schultz's family says he is 28-years-old. Anchorage Fire Department initially reported that he is 29-years-old.

At 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the Anchorage Fire Department held a press conference at Fire Station 1.

Deputy Chief of Operations Anchorage Fire Department, Jodie Hettrick, addressed Monday evening's training exercise incident which left an Anchorage firefighter severely injured.

According to Hettrick, at approximately 4:15 p.m. on June 5th, firefighter-paramedic Ben Schultz, 28, was training when he sustained a critical injury.

"He was immediately assisted by his crew members who shortly thereafter transported him to a local hospital," she said.

According to AFD, the events leading up to the incident are still under investigation.

Hettrick added, "We ask that you respect the family's wish for privacy as they work through this difficult time."

AFD says Schultz has been with the department since 2011.
