What's Working: Support Program for Mentally Ill Felons

By  |

KTUU (Anchorage) -- NBC News recently aired a special series of reports called "Justice for All," that give a look at the prison system and programs that give offenders a second chance.

It turns out, efforts to improve the criminal justice system and criminal reintegration programs are ongoing in Alaska as well.

KTUU looked at an intervention program here in Alaska that's helping the mentally ill make the often difficult transition from prison life back into society.

While its still a struggle for offenders -- especially those fighting serious mental illness -- to avoid the criminal justice system once they are released from jail, a program called the Institutional Discharge Project Plus (IDP+) is showing that it doesn't have to be that way.

This is Ed Herring's success story.
