ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Anchorage will cool down to 57 degrees on Saturday night with mostly cloudy skies.
A weather front heading north will bring steady rain to Kodiak through Sunday. Rain, associated with this feature, will spread north, but should be generally confined to the eastern/southern Kenai Peninsula and northern Gulf. Downslope drying to the Lee Side (non-wind side non Gulf Side) of the Chugach/Kenai Mountains with southeast cross-barrier wind flow should take a bite out of precipitation potential. The coastal high pressure ridge will strengthen today and Sunday with the approach of a weather front. This combined with lower pressure inland with the warm air mass just to the north will give rise to brisk and gusty winds across Turnagain Arm, Knik River Valley and along the Copper River today with the strongest winds on Sunday.
Winds pick up to 15 mph out of the southeast Saturday night in Anchorage. Sunday we warm up to 65 degrees while under cloudy skies as well as 40 mph winds along Turnagain Arm and in higher elevations. Sunday night we drop down to 57 degrees while under cloudy skies as well as 40 mph winds along Turnagain Arm and in higher elevations
Partly sunny on Monday with 25 mph winds along Turnagain Arm and in higher elevations while we see a high of 67 degrees. Monday night we drop down to 54 degrees while under mostly cloudy skies.
Looking ahead, Anchorage will be mostly cloudy on Tuesday with a high of 67 degrees.
Fire Weather: Instability levels should be sufficient to kick off some isolated thunderstorms over the Copper River Basin and Susitna Valley. The main focus being along the Talkeetna Mountains and Western Basin. The storm front that is heading north today (Saturday) and Sunday will bring wetting rains to the western Kenai on Sunday and Monday. Otherwise, except for passing showers, inland areas will not likely see wetting rains Sunday. However, as the front gets closer on Monday, moisture may overcome downsloping (sinking and drying) and allow for wetting rains to spread to the Western Kenai Peninsula.
