Winds start to calm so look out for some early fog

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - While under cloudy skies Thursday Anchorage warms to near 41 degrees.

Warmer air is pushing in from the south across Southcentral bringing mixed precipitation. Intermittent light rain has been falling since last (Wednesday) night from the Matanuska Valley southward. Accumulating snow is likely in the northern Susitna Valley through Thursday morning (2-3" being possible in Broad Pass) with higher totals along the Denali Highway towards Paxson.

Freezing rain has begun falling in the Copper River Basin as of last night and will likely continue into Thursday morning. Precipitation will taper off Thursday afternoon through Friday with the exception of rain persisting over Kodiak Island.

For the extended period, the forecast starts off with a weakening system moving into the Gulf and Bering Sea coasts Saturday morning as a front moves across the western Bering Sea and western Aleutians. By Sunday, a low develops over the southern Bering Sea and tracks near the Pribilof Islands by Monday. A second low-pressure system approaches the Gulf on Monday as well. Meanwhile, stronger storms will move in from the southwest between the Bering Sea and the Alaska Peninsula early next week.

After the weakening front along the coast fully dissipates by Sunday, Southcentral looks to be notably drier for the Sunday through Tuesday time period. Cooler air develops and builds over the Copper River Basin into early next week. As such, an extended period of gusty winds is expected through the Matanuska Valley, Thompson Pass, and the Copper River Delta. We will continue to monitor but for now, nothing yet stands out that indicates that those winds will become strong or damaging at any time.

Early fog while under cloudy skies in Anchorage Thursday as well as a 30 percent chance of some light drizzle or rain as we see a high of 41 degrees. Variable 10 mph winds will be out of the east from 15-30 mph along Turnagain Arm as well as in higher elevations. Thursday night we drop down to 35 degrees while under cloudy skies with winds out of the east from 10-25 mph along Turnagain Arm as well as in higher elevations

Mostly cloudy Friday as we warm up to 42 degrees for a high temperature. Friday night we will be mostly cloudy as we drop down to 36 degrees.

Looking ahead, Anchorage will be partly sunny on Saturday with a high temperature of 40 degrees.
