Woman faces charges after stealing a vehicle, ramming a police car and having a stolen gun

ANCHORAGE, (KTUU) - Anchorage Police arrested a 23-year-old woman, charging her with multiple crimes including running from police and drug possession.

APD said Della M. Northway took someone’s Chevy Suburban from a parking lot on the 5400-block of Northwood Drive on June 11th. The owner of the Chevy was out of town at the time, and when they got back they noticed the vehicle was gone.

The next day, June 12th, a patrol officer saw the vehicle being driven in the area of E 20th Avenue and Lake Otis Parkway. A computer check of the license plate confirmed the Chevy was reported as stolen the day before. The officer followed the stolen Chevy until back up arrived.

Moments later the officer tried to pull over the Chevy at E 16th Court and Rosemary Street. Police say Northway immediately sped backwards away from the patrol car and turned sharply into the front yard of a home while striking an unoccupied parked car in the process.

The officer blocked in the Chevy with the push bumper of his patrol car. Northway tried twice to push the patrol car with the Chevy. Both attempts were unsuccessful but did result in damage to the police vehicle.

After seeing there was no way to take off with the Chevy, police say Nothway got out of the driver’s seat, got back into the vehicle, crawled out of the passenger side of the SUV, and began to run.

Eventually she was caught.

Police took an adult female passenger into custody once another officer arrived at that scene.

Both Northway and the passenger were taken to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives.

A search of the stolen vehicle produced a handgun and two magazines. The gun had been reported as stolen to APD on May 21, 2019. The gun belonged to an Uber driver who thought one of his passengers had stolen it from underneath the driver’s seat while he was out of the car and re-arranging items in the vehicle’s trunk.

The Uber passenger was not one of the two people caught in the stolen Suburban.

After questioning, Northway was transported to the Anchorage Jail.
During processing the Corrections staff found cocaine hidden on her body. Della was charged with Vehicle Theft I, Theft II, Criminal Mischief III, Misconduct Involving a Weapon III – Felon in Possession, Fail to Stop, and Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance III.

Her passenger was not charged.
