ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) — With just one more weekend left for the Alaska high school football season, this week's KTUU Tailgate Tour heads to Wasilla for the 40th annual Potato Bowl between Palmer and Wasilla.
The match up between crosstown rivals dates all the way back to 1979, and the Moose own a 29-10 series lead according to the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.
Palmer won last year’s game 27-26 in overtime, giving Palmer's Rod Christiansen an impressive 19-8 record as head coach in Potato Bowl games.
The 2018 Potato Bowl kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 28 at Wasilla High School.
ASBN Week 8 Poll
As the regular season winds down, playoff opportunities are aplenty across the prep football landscape. The Alaska Sports Broadcasting network has the East Thunderbirds leading their Division I poll.
Friday’s game between East and Service will serve as the CIC championship game, with the winner taking the conference number one seed into the state playoffs. South High School will return to the playoffs for the first time since their state championship season in 2014. At the bottom of the conference, Dimond and West will kick off for the fourth and final playoff berth.
In the Chugach Conference, Bartlett locked up the conference crown with a blowout victory over Wasilla. The Golden Bears jumped two spots in the ASBN Division I poll this week, winning 40-0 over the Warriors, while Colony fell to third place after defeating Juneau-Unified 49-0.
In the ASBN Div. II/III polls, Eagle River jumps from fifth to second after defeating Chugiak 34-21 for the first time in school history. Soldotna remains atop the small schools poll heading into the last week of the season, taking on rival Kenai High School.
