ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) — Chugiak High School is looking to build off of a successful 2017 season, which saw the Mustangs win a conference title, but falling short in the state semifinals.
New head coach Ryan Landers is taking the helm of the Mustangs after spending 13 seasons as assistant.
"I don't know if you can ever be 100 percent prepared for something like this,” Landers said. “I'm learning something new every day. I think I have everything dialed in, and then all of a sudden there’s a curve ball.”
Former head coach Roger Spackman is still with the program, and will be calling plays for the C-Team.
One name missing from this year's roster is Derryk Snell. The 2017 player of year graduated this spring, and is moving on to play football for Montana State University in the fall.
Snell was a part of a large senior class last season which left a few key positions, including quarterback, up for grabs. Landers says he expects returning players to have bigger roles on this year’s team.
Mustangs open their season against East High School on August 10th.
