ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Fifteen years since their first meeting in the fall of 2004, South and Service high schools will kick off in the 2019 ASAA Div. I Championship game.
In a season with no clear-cut favorite both teams took unique roads to the championship. The Cougars fell to the Cook Inlet Conference three seed after losing their final two games of the regular season, but rebounded quickly defeating Chugiak 42-7 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The Wolverines finished fourth in the CIC, and defeated Juneau-Unified in the first round of the playoffs 54-14.
Many thought Service would take on East in the semifinals before the Thunderbirds were upset by Colony in the opening round of the playoffs. Cougars took down the Knights 27-18 to improve 8-2 on the season.
The Wolverines were tasked with taking down West who had been to six straight state title games. It came down to the fourth quarter as South quarterback Jackson Harmon threw a game winning 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Quincy Hartwell with 18.6 seconds left to send South to the championship.
These two teams met in 2012 state championship game when the Wolverines won 28-19.
