Alaska prep basketball teams tip-off in holiday hoop tournaments

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) The holidays are the busiest time of year for travel, and that was the case for Alaska high school basketball teams this weekend.

Cactus Jam

Dimond High boys won the Cactus Jam in Phoenix, Arizona defeating familiar opponent Colony in the championship 56-54. Dimond won in comeback fashion after trailing 31-18 at the half, Lynx’s Isaiah Moses was selected tournament MVP. The season series between these two teams is knotted at a game apiece.

Surf N’ Slam

The Surf N’ Slam tournament in Sand Diego, California hosted two Alaska teams. The Colony High Girls took third after defeating Puyallup 35-34 on Saturday, The Knights Indiya Clarke voted to the all-tournament team, and the Eagle River boys took sixth after losing to 66-52 to Hockinson.

Capital City Classic

Busy weekend of hoops at Juneau-Douglas High School for the Princess Cruises Capital City Classic. The East Anchorage Thunderbirds took home the girls title taking down Juneau-Douglas 57-55. In the boys championship Juneau-Douglas took down New York’s Main-Endwell 66-61 to win the Capital City Classic for the second straight year. Juneau’s Israel Yadao was the boy’s tournament MVP, and East Anchorage’s Sky Miller earned MVP honors for the girl’s tournament.
