Alaskans sweep freestyle sprint at national championships in Michigan

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - For the first time in both of their careers, Gus Schumacher and Hailey Swirbul won titles at the Senior National Championships.

Anchorage’s Schumacher, who is just 19 years old, won the men’s 1.5-kilometer freestyle sprint in 3:02.95 and Alaska Pacific University’s Hailey Swirbul won the women’s race in 3:36.47.

Anchorage’s Caitlin Patterson who skis for the US Ski Team finished in 3:37.32 and took third behind Swirbul. APU’s Thomas O'Hara finished in 3:07.32 and took sixth in the men’s race behind Schumacher.

The Senior National Championships will continue Friday with the Women’s 10-kilometer and Men’s 15-kilometer freestyle races. This year’s cross-country championships are being held in Houghton, Michigan at Michigan Tech University.
