ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Big honors came for a longtime booster at Dimond High School.
Don Winchester and other board members from the school's alumni foundation were at a pep assembly under the guise that they would be honored for their work in providing scholarships to students.
Then, Winchester got the surprise of a lifetime. Starting next season, Dimond High School's football team's home games will be played on the Don Winchester field.
“First I was trying to lock my knees because I felt them starting to give way! It just - it was kind of a shock. It's such an honor,” said Winchester.
He worked for years to get the funding to have the turf installed at Dimond High's alumni stadium.
His advocacy for local high school sports already has recognized by the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.
