Division I basketball headed back to Anchorage

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - For the first time since the 2017 Great Alaska Shootout, Division I men’s basketball programs will hit the hardwood in the 49th state.

This November NCAA Div. I men’s basketball will return to Anchorage, Alaska. ESPN announced the University of Washington and Baylor will tip off at Alaska Airlines Center in partnership with the Joint Base Elemdorf-Richardson for the 2019 Armed Forces Classic.

The University of Alaska Anchorage men will tip off against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, an NCAA Div. III program.

There will reserved tickets for the military, and a portion will be left for public.

The Armed Forces Classic began in 2012 and ESPN says the goal is to bring premier college basketball games to our nation’s troops.

UAA plans to release more details regarding the game during a press conference on March 19.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story stated the tournament would be happening at JBER. It will actually be held at the Alaska Airlines Center.
