EAGLE RIVER, Alaska (KTUU) - Sometimes, all you need to make a season magical is a spark of inspiration.
Eagle River High boys' basketball coach Bob Adkins is still on the court, despite a major leg injury that has confined him to a wheelchair for weeks. (KTUU)
Head basketball coach Bob Adkins is doing that for Eagle River High by making the best of a less-than-ideal situation.
"It's maybe a good lesson to stay off a ladder," Adkins said with a laugh.
Coach Adkins was on his roof trying to put out a chimney fire when he fell and fractured his ankle in two places and shattered his knee in 20.
But he wasn't going to let that get in the way of doing what he loves: Coaching.
"I didn't think he'd be back this soon but I knew sitting at home in a chair wasn't doing it for him," his son, Ryan Adkins said.
For coach Adkins, he says this group of players is trying to change the culture at Eagle River, and he couldn't give up on them by not being here this season.
