ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - She's been dreaming of playing on this stage since she was little.
There are still moments when freshman Eve Stephens can't believe she's actually here, playing for the UAA volleyball team, a team she grew up watching and idolizing.
"I always wanted to be here," Stephens said with a grin. "So, I just want to work really hard. Come in every day, do the best I can and really be a benefit player to the team."
She's certainly done just that. Stephens has already been named GNAC player of the week earlier this season. She leads the team in total kills with 268 and ranks 6th in the GNAC in hitting percentage.
"When other players are seeing that out of a freshman, that drive to be the best you can be, I think that can't do anything but be a good thing," head coach Chris Green said with a chuckle.
Averaging three kills per set, Stephens is having a campaign that most would be envious of. But for Stephens, it's not about the accolades. It's about being the best for the team.
"You really have no choice but to play for them. And that probably the biggest reason why you can play volleyball," she says. "It's a team sport. To play for the girls around you and to compete."
