ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Valdez Halibut Derby began May 18th, but the real competition is now underway after Fairbanks correctional officer Christina Ives landed a 285.6-pound halibut to claim the derby’s top spot.

“It feels incredible! It doesn’t even feel real right now,” Ives told KVAK.

Ives won the Week #3 prize for the top fish, and currently leads the entire derby by 127 pounds. Ives looks to be strong contender for the $10,000 overall prize.

The Valdez Halibut Derby isn’t a stranger to big fish. In 2017 Frieda Wiley won with a 374-pound monster, and in 2018, Patricia Johnson won with a 285.8-pound fish.

The derby ends September 1, and the Women’s Silver Salmon Derby is slated for August 10th. The Valdez Silver Salmon Derby starts July 20th, the same day as the Kids Derby.
