Former UAA Hockey Coach headed back to the ECHL

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) — The ECHL announced Tuesday that former UAA hockey head coach Matt Thomas has found a new home as the head coach of the Cincinnati Cyclones.

The Cyclones are an ECHL affiliate for the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. Thomas is no stranger to the professional hockey ranks, coaching 11 seasons with three different teams from 2002-13. He currently ranks sixth all time in the ECHL with 342 wins, and is the all-time leader in playoff games coached at 97 games.

Thomas’s contract was not renewed with UAA this spring. Thomas had an overall record of 48-105-21 and 39-92-27 in the WCHA in his five seasons as head coach for the Seawolves.
