Anchorage (KTUU) The Kenai Brown Bears came to Anchorage over the weekend to host a pre-draft camp to get a look at prospects ahead of their main camp coming up in July.
The league then held a draft on Tuesday. From there, the Brown Bears will decide who to invite to their main camp in July. After that, it's whittled down to training camp, and then who makes the final roster.
Head coach Josh Petrich says they're looking for kids with character, both on and off the ice.
"Are they good kids, do they have good academics," Petrich said.
Skating is also a factor for the Brown Bears, especially considering what they play on.
"We play on a big, Olympic sheet, and so we have to be able to skate," Petrich emphasived.
But it's not only that. Petrich is looking for players who compete not just when game time rolls around.
"We want guys that want to compete, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, instead of just Friday and Saturday," Petrich says. "The games are the fun part but the work happens Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday, so we want guys who can compete."
