Longtime Alaska youth sports supporter Bill Leavell dies

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Longtime Anchorage prep sports supporter Bill Leavell has passed away after a long battle with diabetes. In 2015 Leavell shared his story of perseverance with KTUU, describing how he returned to the sidelines after getting his entire leg amputated due to an infection.

Originally from Ohio, Leavell started coaching basketball at West in the early 1990s, and left the game for a few years before returning to the Eagles in 2003. Many knew Leavell’s voice from calling games on the radio for the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network, or the diamond where he served as an umpire in baseball.
