Anchorage (KTUU) Two time defending champion Nicolas Petit leads the 2020 Copper Basin 300.
27 mushers began the race on Saturday, in balmy minus 40 degree temperatures.
Petit was the first musher to the first checkpoint, Point Lodge, which is roughly 75 miles from the start. He was quickly followed by Michelle Phillips.
Other notable mushers in the field this year include Yukon Quest winners Brent Sass and Aliy Zirkle and three-time Iditarod champion Mitch Seavey.
