GAKONA, Alaska (KTUU) - The 2019 racing season is off to a good start for Nicolas Petit.
The defending Copper Basin 300 champion took the title for the second straight year early Monday morning, according to the race's Facebook page.
Iditarod veteran Brent Sass was right behind him in second place, with Matt Hall in third, and Sven Haltmann in fourth.
The race usually starts in Glennallen but was moved 30 miles north to Gakona this year due to rivers still not being frozen over.
Petit finished in second place in last year's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. He had led the race until he went off track on Norton Sound.
This is the 30th anniversary of the race.
