Anchorage (KTUU) The Service Cougars had a good start to the 2020 Region IV cross country skiing championships, with their skiers taking 1st in both boys and girls freestyle skate races.
Freshman Meredith Schwartz won the girls 7.6 kilometer freestyle skate, winning with a time of 22:48.1.
Schwartz said the win came as a total surprise.
“Well, I wasn't really, I was trying to win, like any ski race but I wasn't really expecting it and I just went as hard as I could, all the hills, hammering, so, it was exciting," she said with a grin.
For the boys, Schwartz’s teammate Alex Maurer edged out Chugiak’s Michael Earnhart for first place. Maurer skied the 9.9 kilometer race in 25:56.4, with Earnhart finishing in 26:07.7.
Earnhart said the course was fast, and very hilly. He said the motivation to get over those hills is all mental.
"Well, I like feeling fast, and I like winning. So I just keep thinking of like, trying to get on top of the podium and it gets me up the hill."
Region IV skiing continues on Saturday with the classic race at 11 a.m. at Kincaid Park.
