Tailgate Tour heads to Ketchikan, Eagles & Stars sit atop preseason polls

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - It’s not often a high school football team can say it traveled over 1,300 miles to play a football game, but that’s the case for the Barrow High School Whalers.

The team from the Arctic Circle will kick off against Ketchikan High School on Friday for the first KTUU Tailgate Tour game of the 2019 high school football season.

The two Div. III programs are coming off successful 2018 seasons. The Kings went all the way to the state semifinals and finished 6-2 after not even winning a football game in 2017.

The Whalers also had a successful 2018 campaign going to their second straight Alaska School Activities Association Div. III state championship game. Last year the two teams met in September, and Ketchikan won 8-6.

ASBN Preseason Poll

The Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network released its preseason prep football polls, which gave West and Soldotna High Schools top honors heading into the 2019 season.

The West Anchorage Eagles have been to the state championship game the past six seasons, and return last year’s quarterback Bubba Mendoza. The Stars are coming off their seventh straight ASAA Div. II state championship.
