ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The UAA men’s basketball team turned some heads Wednesday making a late signing just before their season tipped off.
"We usually don't do signings this late into October, but we were really searching for a special individual," said Coach Osborne.
Who's that special individual you might ask? Five-year-old James Ludwig from Eagle River, who's been diagnosed with epilepsy, which impacts his day-to-day life.
Head Coach Rusty Osborne said the team recruited him for his grit and determination. For the next two years, he'll join the team for practices, games, and dinners -- serving as an inspiration.
It's something Michelle Ludwig, James' Mother, says means a lot to their family.
"It gives me hope in a way. A lot of people don't understand our circumstances,” said Michelle. “Having people who are willing to take us on, and learn about James.”
Ludwig’s signing was a part of a nonprofit called Team IMPACT which pairs kids with serious illnesses with college athletic teams across the country.
