ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The University of Alaska Anchorage Women’s basketball team clinched their fifth consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball regular-season title Thursday, beating Northwest Nazarene 64-55.
The Green and Gold were led by Sydni Stallworth’s 13 points, and junior point guard Yazmeen Goo pitched in 8 points and 6 steals.
Wednesday’s victory extends the team's winning streak to 19 games, and avenges its only loss of the season, to Northwest Nazarene in December. The two division rivals shared the GNAC regular-season title last year.
As for the postseason, UAA remained No. 3 in the latest NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, and are nationally ranked No. 6. The winners of the GNAC, Pacwest and California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournament all earn automatic bids to the NCAAs, along with the top five ‘at-large’ teams from the region.
The team will take to the court at the postseason tournament for tie conference championship. The GNAC women’s basketball championships begin March 7 in Bellingham, Wash.
