ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The University of Alaska Anchorage Women’s basketball team announced Monday assistant coach Patrick Flanigin had passed away on Christmas Day.

"Pat had a significant impact on our program, both on and off the court," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy in a release from the school. "He was an excellent example of how to treat others, learn from mistakes, lead with compassion, and serve with purpose.”

Flanigin had been a volunteer coach for the past five seasons and was a standout college basketball player at the University of Wyoming before playing professional basketball in the Continental Basketball Association for the Anchorage Northern Knights and the Billings Volcanoes.

Off the court Flanigin was active in the Anchorage community, having served as president of the YMCA and coaching kids in the First Tee golf program.
