UAA parts ways with hockey coach

Anchorage (KTUU) - The University of Alaska Anchorage announced Wednesday that it will not renew the contract of head hockey coach Matt Thomas.

Thomas had an overall record of 48-105-21 and 39-92-27 in the WCHA in his five seasons as head coach for the Seawolves.

The athletic department says a nationwide search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

We spoke with interim athletic direct Tim McDiffett and he says what went into this decision was the desire to be more competitive.

"We want to be able to compete for championships, to win the Alaska Airlines Governors Cup, to have home ice for the WCHA," McDiffett said.

McDiffet said at this point, the program wants to be more successful on the ice.

When asked what the future of the program was, McDiffett said "We support Seawolves hockey. Period."

This is a developing story.
