Wolverines and Knights headline Tailgate Tour playoff coverage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) — The regular season has officially come to a close, but that doesn’t mean our KTUU Tailgate Tour is taking a break-- we’re heading to Palmer for a state playoff matchup between Colony and South.

This game will be a rematch from Week 1 when the Knights edged the Wolverines by just one point, 27-26.

South is returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2014 when the team won a state title. It will also be Wolverines' first trip to the playoffs under head coach Walter Harmon. South earned the No. 3 seed out of the Cook Inlet Conference after finishing the season 4-4 and 2-2 in Conference.

The Knights return to the playoffs after earning the second seed out of the Chugach Conference finishing the season with just one loss to conference champions Bartlett.

ASAA Division I

This year’s first round of the state playoffs has a lot of familiar faces including defending champions Bartlett. The Golden Bears look to be the first team since the Dimond High School in 2000 and 2001 to win back-to-back large school state championships.

East High looks like a strong candidate to a make a run for a state championship winning the Cook Inlet Conference for the third time in four years. The Thunderbirds were able to rebound from an early blowout loss to Cesar Chavez High School, winning 6 straight games to end the season.

West High School seems to own the state playoffs since 2010 winning three state championships, and taking seven trips to the title game in the process.

ASAA Division II/III

Soldotna High School’s record winning streak might have been broken week one of the season, but the Stars still have a chance to win their 7th straight Division II state championship. The peninsula powerhouse will be heavy favorite heading into the playoffs ending their season with seven wins, with most coming in blow out fashion.

The Eagle River Wolves hope to keep their Cinderella season alive going to the playoffs for the first time in school history. This year has been full of firsts and national recognition for the Wolves, defeating rival Chugiak High for the first time in school history, and receiver Bryson Rollman incredible grab making it all the way to ESPN recently.
