ANCHORAGE (KTUU) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Eagle River High School held its annual Spike Out Cancer match Tuesday.
Before the match started, the Wolves surprised Holly Odegard, a brain cancer survivor, and Denise Demetree-Trombley, a breast cancer survivor, with $700.
Odegard says she doesn't like the spotlight, and if she knew this surprise was going to happen she wouldn't have shown up. Both survivors didn't know they were going to be recognized at the volleyball match before they went.
"I had a couple of co-workers asking me to come, 'Are you coming, coming, coming?' and finally I said yes: Here I am,” said Demetree-Trombley.
The Wolves volleyball team picked both because of their impact on the community. Odegard is a gym teacher at Gruening Middle School, and Denise Demetree-Trombley a principal at Alpenglow Elementary.
